1. Why Is Open Innovation Necessary?
“User personalization” is a driving force of open innovation. In the age of Internet, it’s getting easier and easier for users to get detailed product information. With the growth of Internet natives, user demands are getting more and more personalized, fragmental, and there is an ever growing requirement for customized products. Therefore, in order to meet user’s personalized demands, enterprises have to change the traditional innovation method and co-innovate with users and first-class resources.
“Product Innovation Acceleration” is a driving force of open innovation. As is stated in Big Bang Disruption, the exponential development of technology and the rapid iteration of products have transformed the previous innovation method. Innovative products mushroom extremely fast, urging enterprises to shorten R&D cycle, iterate products and improve user experience, which is possible only by gathering the smartest minds in the world.
“Industry disruption” is a driving force of open innovation. In the age of Internet, every industry is more or less influenced by the Internet, and disruptive innovation is ubiquitous. The disruption of enterprises is both beyond and within expectation, and closed systems are doomed to perish. Only by building open platforms and innovation ecosystems can enterprises continue to innovate and get a new life.
2. The Basic Idea of Haier’s Open Innovation
The basic idea of Haier’s Open Innovation is that “the world is our R&D center”. In essence, it refers to the zero-distance innovation and sustainable innovation among global users, makers and innovation resources.
3. The Goal of Haier’s Open Innovation
The goal of Haier’s open innovation is to build an innovation ecosystem in which global resources and users participate and continuously produce products of exponential technology.
4. History of HOPE
Since the 1990s, Haier has started an exploration of open innovation mode. The Central Institute was established to strengthen Haier’s innovation cooperation with the outside world.
In 2009, the open innovation center was established, with an independent team to expand offline open innovation business. Up till now, Haier has built an innovation resource network spreading across the world with the five R&D centers as its nodes.
In October, 2013, Haier Open Partnership Ecosystem (hereinafter referred to as HOPE) was officially launched.
HOPE was developed and operated by the open innovation center. Hence Haier’s open innovation system has been transformed from offline to O2O.
In June, 2014, HOPE was upgraded.
Based on the ideas of openness, cooperation, innovation and sharing, the platform joins hands with global R&D organizations and individuals to provide advanced technology information and innovation solutions for users by integrating various outstanding solutions, intelligence and ideas.
On May 7th, 2015, HOPE met its first transnational third-party client Faurecia (the largest auto engineering solution and spare part supplier in the world).
The two parties signed a strategic cooperation agreement on regional innovation resource integration and sharing, and hoped to share superior resources in auto field and promote cross-cutting technological innovation cooperation through transnational cooperation. After Faurecia joined HOPE, the resources and ideas originally for home appliance enterprises on the platform are now also available to it, providing technological support and service for its innovation.
On May 8th, 2015, Haier Open Innovation Week was kicked off in Haier University, Qingdao.
On this grand occasion, elites from over 100 global technological innovation enterprises, technology transfer agencies, investment incubators, maker teams and other technological innovation fields expressed their opinions with the idea of openness, cooperation, sharing and win-win progress to explore an open innovation path in a new age. As the organizer, HOPE thoughtfully arranged three parts, namely “open innovation summit forum”, “open innovation public class” and “disruptive project symposium” for the participants to discuss new ideas and new modes of China’s open innovation.
On Aug 7th, 2015, HOPE Agent program official launched.
This program is aim to recruit professional technology scouters globally to help business units of Haier appliances group find and cooperate with innovative technology providers.
On Dec 12th, 2016, HOPE Innovation partner community official launched.
We find out success of innovation is highly relevant to the individual person who really involve into an innovation activity, we start to pay more attention to the individual people instead of organization, community is a better way to encourage people to share and be active in an innovation activity, there is more synergy through a lived community.
